2009 saw a big increase in lock snapping, West Yorkshire Police experienced a sharp rise in the number of break ins where the burglars had snapped the euro profile cylinder lock on uPVC doors and then opened the multipoint locking system allowing them to gain entry into the property.
A standard euro profile cylinder lock, the type of lock which is fitted to about 90% of all the uPVC, composite, aluminium and timber doors in the UK can be broken in just"9.2 Seconds" and the multipoint locking system opened by a burglar using no special skills and with nothing more than just two easily obtainable DIY tools!
This is due to a design flaw and the soft metal from which the euro profile cylinder is made.
The problem has been highlighted on the BBC television programs Inside Out and Crime Scene Rescue they can both be viewed again below.
